Our Marine Park SONYC students have created a video to enter into the Department of Transportation “Take Action Against Distraction” Contest.
Millennium’s SONYC Program at the Fillmore Academy spent Veteran’s Day visiting our nation’s veterans. The first stop was to meet World War II Veteran John Cortese, whose father opened the Golden Gate Fruit and Vegetable Store, located at 2080 Flatbush Avenue, in 1939. After returning from the war, Mr. Cortese, a Military Police Officer, took ownership of the store. Inside the shop you’ll see photos of Tony Bennett and Gil Hodges, but much more, too. Photos of Flatbush Avenue from the 40s and 50s with trolley cars and a photo of Mr. Cortese’s Army Battalion and Commanding Officers adorn the walls. His family – two daughters, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter can be found walking along the stores almost original floors that were installed in 1947.
The students were impressed by the stories and anecdotes shared by Mr. Cortese, who graciously opened his store to over a dozen members of our organization and SONYC programs.
Next, the students of Shell Bank IS 014 stopped at the Midwood Senior Center located at 4185 Avenue I to pay tribute to the veterans of this neighborhood center. Accompanied by SONYC Program Director Michelle Feeney, the students recited poems and joined the seniors for a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Veteran Lenox Hutson (wearing his dress uniform in the group photo below) simply had two words. “It’s wonderful,” he said.
